Ambuja Realty reaches out to the AILA victims in Sunderbans |
|
Relief for the cyclone-affected in Sunderbans Ambuja Realty and Friends of Ambuja arranged for relief for the AILA victims on the 5th of June. The Relief team comprised 30 members. It was a humbling experience for the team to witness the plight of the villagers who lost everything to the cyclone – which in its type and dimension was the first in their lifetime. With agriculture being the only source of livelihood and survival, the cyclone inundated the fields with saline water resulting in a halt in cultivation for at least one year. Aila victims were therefore surviving without food, shelter, drinking water with little hope in sight. Given this situation, Ambuja Realty tried to reach out to the Aila victims. The Operation On the afternoon of 4th June, the Ambuja team rushed to the Bombay Road godown of OTS Limited to arrange for the relief material. They packed the chaul and dal into 5:1 ratio for a family and loaded them in the truck along with other material. The next day at 5am, the team started for Dhamakhali. After reaching there, the relief was offloaded into two motorised boats and by 8.30am four boats dispersed for two different islands. The team for Kumirmari at South 24 Parganas reached around 11am and the team heading for Shamshernagar in North 24 Parganas reached its destination at 12.30pm. Shamshernagar was also the last hamlet on the Indian side. People were already waiting for relief on the ghaats at Shamshernagar. However, the team learnt that some relief was already reaching the victims at Shamshernagar but the remote corners were totally neglected. The team made it its mission to reach out to these victims who were without any aid even after two weeks of Aila having raged havoc. Accordingly, the team divided itself into subgroups and penetrated deep into the most affected locations. In total they catered to 8 different locations including Haridaskathi, Parghumti, Kalitala and Shamshernagar. The 17 tonnes relief that was distributed included rice, dal, drinking water, baby food, zeoline, cooking oil, match sticks, saris, lungis, dresses for children, torches, ORS, medicines, biscuits, and potatoes. They also organised a medical camp at Kalitala which was manned by four doctors and distributed a lot of medicines. Some patients were detected of severe diarrhoea at this camp and were immediately admitted to a hospital. The feedback received from the victims was overwhelming. The whole operation was backed by Ambuja Realty’s in-house Relief Committee to whom the employees donated generously. Mr. Harshavardhan Neotia, Chairman & Managing Director – Ambuja Realty personally donated generously and helped raise a sizeable corpus. |

Udayan Shalini |
The Udayan Shalini Fellowships have given wing to many deserving students who, despite their academic excellence, have had to grapple with their family’s financial pressures that naturally beget what the celebrated economist Amartya Sen termed ‘poverty of opportunities’. Through constant support, care and mentoring, many young girls have discovered that ‘there is nothing like a dream to create the future’. And many futures are being shaped so that more and more dreams are born. And nurtured till fruition. Proving that with a little help and belief, nothing is impossible. With support from Ambuja Realty, some of the awardees have gone on to specialise in subjects like engineering and have been offered plum assignments by three corporate giants. |

Vocational Training at Upohar |
|
![]() |
India with the youngest population in the world has the unique manpower strength to tackle the shortage of productive labour in a business scenario dominated by the ageing force. On the flipside, due to the lack of formal training, supply of unskilled labour is high but wages they demand is low. The industrial sector, of our country, is fundamentally not designed to offer jobs to people with less formal education. Currently, facilities imparting skill development programs cater to about 3 million people each year while the total labour force stands at 400 million. Vocational education and training should be designed to train for employment with flexibility of catering to a wide variety of requirements. It should prepare youth for a vocation of their choice, reduce unemployment and enable them to earn higher wages through higher productivity. Upohar -The Condoville is a mixed-income group housing project for the LlG, MIG and HIG segments. It envisages better living conditions and facilities for the LlG and MIG that are seen for the first time ever in these segments, like high speed lifts, well developed green spaces and a Residents' Activity Centre that has a health-club, lap pool and other recreation facilities. Vocational Training Centre at Upohar has been designed with the aim of making a significant contribution towards society. The Vocational Training Centre primarily focuses on reducing unemployment as best as possible. The Vocational Training Centre is proposed to be one of the components of Upohar -The Condoville. The purpose will be to create a pool of skilled labour to meet the growing needs of the community and the industry. The courses offered will be aimed at local youth wishing to acquire various vocational skills as a source of income. The courses could cover various fields ranging from carpentry, light duty tools and dye making to some emerging fields related to mobile phones and computers. The institution will cover an area of 35000 sqft with the necessary administrative offices, teachers' rooms, housing facilities. Each course will have its own room with appropriate facilities like worktables, workshop, laboratory and tools storage space. Each room will also ensure good ventilation and adequate light. The number of students per discipline will be limited to 15, ensuring adequate guidance for everyone. Every course will have its own trained Course Instructor and an Assistant. It will also provide facilities for students and teachers like canteens, toilets, gathering area as well as area for extra-curricular activities. We also envision two large workshops that will accommodate the entire institution's student population to work on larger work tools, instruments and machines. This workshop will be designed to minimise noise penetration, vibrations etc. while using larger machinery. The Vocational Training Centre will be housed over two floors. This will accommodate all staff rooms, workshops, laboratories, course rooms, offices, seminar rooms, separate dormitories for men and women, library, computer room, toilets, canteen etc. There will be provision to house 44 men and 27 women, a computer room that will put up 40 persons at a time, a library and reading room that will hold up to 40 persons. We hope that the Vocational Training Centre will benefit the youth in and around the vicinity of Upohar-The Condoville and they, in turn, will make a significant contribution towards the development of our country and reduce unemployment.
